The Trial of Jesus: Theater at Clube da Cela

In 1975, I was a student at the Narciso do Espírito Santo Industrial and Commercial School in Santa Comba, Cela, Angola. The hallways echoed with the excitement of senior students eager to create a memory that would last forever.

In this dreamlike setting, Professor Manuel Bento, with a twinkle in his eye, made a bold proposal: to stage the play “The Trial of Jesus.” This would not be just a play; it would be an act of passion, dedication, and unity that would transcend the stage.

We, the students, with our hearts pounding, dove headfirst into the challenge. It was an intense journey of rehearsals and learning, where each one dedicated themselves tirelessly to their role. The cast became a family, and Diego Fabri’s work was our story to tell.

The night of the big performance arrived, and the theater at Clube Recreativo da Cela was filled with anticipation. Friends, family, and community members gathered to witness this unique journey. The curtains opened, and an expectant hush enveloped the audience.

I, with unparalleled intensity, took on the role of John the Baptist. My performance brought to life not just a character, but a whole spectrum of emotions. The audience found themselves immersed in the profound story of Jesus’ condemnation, while we, the actors, gave it our all.

As the final scene came to a close and the curtains closed, the theater was filled with reverent silence. And then, something magical happened. The audience, as if they could contain no more, erupted in thunderous applause. Tears of joy, smiles, and gratitude mingled.

The applause did not stop. It was a standing ovation that echoed throughout the theater and vibrated in the hearts of everyone present. The applause and praise continued for what seemed like an eternity. It was a moment of pure triumph, of profound fulfillment.

This play was not just a theatrical performance. It was living proof that passion, dedication and unity can create moments that transcend time. Fifty years have passed, but the memory of that night still shines like a guiding star, reminding everyone that art and friendship can unite hearts and create eternal memories.

Details about the book of this play:

BOOK (EX). Original Portuguese publication by Editorial Aster-Lisbon. Softcover edition, (18x12cm), with 132 pages, including a fold-out photo of a group scene at the Teatro Nacional D.Maria II.

This well-known play by the Italian Diego Fabbri has been staged several times. We know of it in 1973 by Grupo Mérito Dramático Avintense, and nine years later another gentleman from the north, the well-known pianist Rui Guedes, produced this play together with António Semedo. Mike Sergeant also collaborated at the time and an album was even released by Orfeu / Arnaldo Trindade. As for this little book, it has documentary value for those who enjoy this genre, since it includes all the information regarding the Company that first staged this two-act play. It was the Rey Colaço-Robles Monteiro Company and the dates were between December 10, 1958 and April 19, 1959. Among the many actors, some highlights are Amélia Rey Colaço, Mariana Rey Colaço, Varela Silva, Luis Cerqueira, Ema Paul, Catarina Avelar, Jacinto Ramos and Carlos Avilez. See less
