Introduction: The Homeland and the Unexpected Departure
I was born in 1959, under the vibrant sky of Waku Kungo, formerly Santa Comba, in the heart of Angola. My childhood was woven with the vibrant colors of the land and the distant sounds of freedom, as the country dreamed of independence. I grew up between the hope for a prosperous future and the reality of an unstable present.
In 1975, my life, along with that of so many others, changed irreversibly. I was uprooted from my homeland through the largest airlift to Portugal, leaving behind memories and dreams, in an attempt to escape the violence consuming the country. Fear and uncertainty were constant companions for those who, like me, left everything behind in search of safety.
A New World: Crossing the Ocean to the United States
A year later, with my heart still heavy with longing, I crossed another ocean. This time, the destination was Los Angeles, California. With a Green Card in hand and a suitcase full of hopes, I was ready to start a new life in a new world. In this new country, every step was a learning experience, every day a battle to integrate, to build a career and a life. But the strength Angola gave me, resilience forged amid farewells and wars, made me stronger. I learned to value every opportunity, to embrace every challenge as a door to the future.
The Refugee Journey: Loss and Hope
This story is mine, but it echoes in the lives of hundreds of thousands of refugees who, like me, were forced to leave their homes in search of peace and safety. It is a narrative of loss and discovery, of despair and hope, a reminder of human resilience and the power of the spirit to overcome adversity.
Here, I share not only my journey but also that of all those who found themselves between two worlds, struggling to rebuild their lives far from the land where they were born. It is a tribute to every uncertain step taken towards an unknown future, to every tear shed for a past that will never be the same, and to every smile that we slowly begin to reconstruct in new horizons.
Life in Santa Clara: Work, Community, and Roots
Over the years in Santa Clara, California, the longing for Angola was a constant shadow in my life, a silent reminder of everything that had been left behind. I found comfort in small things: the music playing in some distant corner, the taste of a dish that reminded me of home, the conversations in Portuguese with friends who had also crossed oceans for safety.
Hard work became my redemption and my reinvention. In electronics, I found not just a career, but a passion that filled the void left by war and loss. Every circuit I designed, every problem I solved, was a step away from the turbulent past and towards a promising future. It was as if, with each success, I rebuilt a part of what had been destroyed.
The Resilience and Hope of a Refugee
In this new world, I learned the true meaning of resilience. I learned that life, though marked by adversity, is also full of opportunities for renewal. The challenges were many, but with every obstacle overcome, I felt more integrated and more a part of this new country that welcomed me. But I never forgot where I came from. The Angola I knew, with its stunning landscapes and resilient people, has always been part of who I am. Even from afar, I sought ways to help those who still faced hardships in my homeland. Physical distance never diminished the love I felt for my country and my people.
Crossing Worlds: Life in Silicon Valley
I initially arrived in Los Angeles, but my final destination was Santa Clara, California, in the heart of Silicon Valley. It was there that I graduated from Santa Clara University and joined the computer revolution that evolved into what we know today. In this new phase, my life took on a new rhythm and an even more defined purpose. On campus, surrounded by brilliant and innovative minds, I felt inspired to dive deep into the study of electronic engineering. Every class, every project was a door opening to the future of technology.
With my degree in hand, the doors of opportunity opened even wider. I joined Micron Technology, where my passion and knowledge found real application. Working at one of the pioneering companies in the semiconductor sector was not just a job; it was being part of a story in the making, the story of how technology can transform the world. At the same time, my connection with the Portuguese community in Santa Clara kept me anchored to my roots.
Inspiration for Future Generations
This is the story of a man who crossed continents and challenges, always looking to the future but with his feet firmly planted in the traditions that shaped his character. It is a testament to the power of education, determination, and technology as tools for change—not only for an individual but for the world.
Reflecting on the journey, from the uncertain days in Angola to the challenges and triumphs in Silicon Valley, each chapter of my life served as an important step in building a legacy of resilience and hope. And by sharing my story, I hope to shed light for those still walking through the valley of shadows of adversity, showing that, in the end, it is possible to find a home anywhere in the world, as long as we keep faith in ourselves and in the future.
Conclusion: A Message of Perseverance
With this story, I hope to leave a message of perseverance and optimism for those facing their own storms. May my life serve as a beacon of inspiration, demonstrating that, regardless of the turbulence, we can navigate to calmer waters and reach new horizons of success and fulfillment.
Thus, I conclude this sharing, a sincere account of a man who crossed worlds, overcame obstacles, and found in every new beginning an opportunity for growth and contribution. May future generations look at this story and see that, despite everything, the human spirit is capable of triumphing and turning dreams into tangible realities.
